2010 CNP Election

Dear Crowsnest Pass...

Dear Friends & Neighbors, Tax-Payers & Voters, Supporters & Volunteers; to the Wonderful People of the Crowsnest Pass:

Thank you so very much for your support, generosity and help. It has been a pleasure to get to know those of you who I only just met during this campaign process. I have made quite a few new friends. It has been wonderful to renew old friendships and acquaintances. It has been great to work with my wonderful group of campaign volunteer's. A BIG thank you, to all of you.

I really hope that all of you will continue to drop by my Blog and my website. I don't plan to drop out of sight, now that the election is over. I will remain in the publics view, by my being involved in various areas in and around the Crowsnest Pass.

Feel free to stop me and say hello.

I am leaving this website up and running. I will still continue to write a daily Blog. I will also keep you updated and informed, of council's plans and actions, over the next three years.

I believe that we have turned a huge page here in the Crowsnest Pass. We have already decided in favor of change. We have a new Mayor and an almost all new council.

I have had the pleasure to meet them all and spend some time with most of them. They seem to be very competent people. I'm sure that they will take the Pass forward into a brand new and brighter future!!

(Unofficially) This NEW council is comprised of our new Mayor: Bruce Decoux, and the 6 Councillors:
Jerry Lonsbury, Andrew Saje, Brian Gallant, Larry Mitchell, Emile Saindon and Siegbert Gail.

Congratulations to all of you!!

As I plan to run again in October of 2013, I will leave most of my information available here, for anyone who wishes to read it.

I will update this site, as needed, as time goes on.

Please still feel free to contact me with any issues, concerns and ideas that you may have for or about the Crowsnest Pass.

As I said during my campaign, my door will always be open, my phone always on. That door will just not be situated in the Municipal Building.

I still feel strongly that our council needs a female voice. In fact, I believe that we need at least one woman on council. Two would be better.

That is one reason why I plan to run again.

I don't want to offend any men here, but there are good reasons to have women sitting on council.

Women look at things differently than men. They react differently and process things differently.

They do not posture with each other. They do not generally compete with each other or one up each other for a position of power. Women tend to have a calming effect on things.

They are the nurturers. They see things from a whole different perspective then men. They think differently than men. Women are used to multi-tasking and still making effective choices.

They can balance council out.

This is why you can count on me, to run again, in October of 2013.

Thank you to everyone who got out and voted in this election. Your vote made a BIG difference!! The Crowsnest Pass was obviously ready for change!!

A very big thank you to all who voted for me and who supported me. I plan to run again in three years time. I still think we need women on council.

Also, I will continue my daily blogs and be as involved in council as I can be. I will do my best to keep them honest!!

Stay tuned for many more updates and blogs......

Today Is The BIG Day!!!

Time to get out and VOTE!!

This may just be one of the most important elections in CNP history!! Change is happening. We already know that will have a new mayor. Who will get your vote for Mayor?? Will we have more of the same "old school" governance as the last 20 plus years??? Do we want a mayor who thinks that the way to run things is ALL by "policy"?? Policy is good, but it is not everything. We have to consider thinking "outside the box", if we want to bring the Crowsnest Pass into the future.

Do we want a Mayor who already has a tarnished history on council?? Actions speak louder than words!! What do their recent actions say about them?? Can people change?? Or are they just telling us what they think we want to hear??

Vote for a Mayor who stands for change!! Vote for a Mayor who will works as a "team" with the other members of council!! Vote for leadership and integrity!!

The same can be said for the people running for a position of councillor. We want a team who can work together for a common good. We want people of "like mind" and who are on the same page. We want leadership and integrity!! Vote for positive change for the future of the Crowsnest Pass!! Let us move forward into a positive direction!!

I hope that you will consider

 SASHA JAEGERBAIRD For Council!!

Thank you all very much for your support.

If elected, I will be your voice on council!! I will make your vote count!!

Monday Is Election Day

Monday is Election Day.

Three people are running for Mayor. There are nineteen candidates running for council. It should be an interesting outcome.

We already know one thing for sure. Change has already happened. We will have a new Mayor!! We can only hope that this new leader is not a recycled version of the past.

Personally, I just hope the candidates that are running realize the seriousness of this position. I hope they realize that this is a real long-term commitment. I've heard it can be a thankless job.

Personally that doesn't scare me off. I'm ready for it. My life has prepared me for it. For me, it's the next logical step. I just worry that some of the other's think it will be a walk in the park. In reality, becoming part of a new council right now, will most likely be the hardest thing that the most people will ever do. Especially if there are a lot of new people.

There is a huge mess in this community that needs to be cleaned up. Years of apathy on behalf of some council members, manipulation by other's, and a general unwillingness to stand up and say "enough is enough", has given us a very dysfunctional council. And an unhealthy home.

They are like a family in some ways. An extremely dysfunctional family. There is the father head of the family, who really doesn't wear the pants. The mother figure, (using the term "mother" very loosely) who does in fact wear the pants and never lets the father forget it. The twin sons who mirror each other's actions, have serious father issues and are momma's boys at heart. The black sheep child, who spends time brooding in a corner. The weird uncle. Finally the grandfather, who remembers the good old days, wishes things could be that way again, but is helpless to do anything about it.

That's our present council in a nutshell.

I hope, if some of the same council members get in again, they will be able to get some much needed social skills therapy. Maybe learn how to "play nice" and share the toys (I mean vote). Let's hope the new council member's are better adjusted individuals. If some of the old council get in again, we can only pray that this becomes a much happier blended family.

If elected, I know I look forward to working with some of the current candidates. I get good vibes from some of them. Even though I don't know very many of them, from what I have read, heard and learned about them, I feel that we could have a good bunch of people leading us into the future.

I hope that we just don't have a bunch of nuts waiting in the wings, ready to jump into the life-raft, at the last minute. It only has room for so many, and I think that it is at capacity now. If a better choice comes along, we might have to toss someone out of the raft.

Unfortunately this community's boat went down awhile ago. It's up to the incoming council to row to shore and start building back a bigger, better and stronger boat. One that will carry us into a much improved and sustainable future.

If this offends any of the current council, frankly, just suck it up. Don't be so serious. Learn to laugh at yourself. Besides, I'm not one to mince my words. I tell it like it is. I stand up for what I believe. I listen to what other's have to say and formulate my own opinion. I will not be manipulated like a puppet on a string. I stand for the greater good of all of us, as a whole. This community needs leadership, not a bunch of sheep blindly being lead to slaughter.

Council needs leaders, who will take us boldly into the future.

For the most part, the feeling I am getting, is that most people agree with me, about the change that is needed.

I know that there will be some people that disagree with me. There always have been. I've always managed to handle it with some amount of grace and dignity. That is just me. Opinionated but fair. Strong-minded but not easily manipulated. I am not a people-pleaser to the expense of my own point of view.

My own point of view is what makes me so uniquely qualified to be on council. I can see things from all sides and angles. I look at all the possible permutations. There is just never one or two sides to everything. Sometimes there are numerous sides to a situation. They have to be explored and investigated. There is rarely ever one solution to a problem. But do know this, there IS always a solution to a problem. I am very good at discovering just what the best possible solution is. What will benefit the most. That includes benefiting people, situations and what will benefit the long term goals of the community, as a whole.

That is who I am. Strong willed and determined. Resourceful and resolute. Caring and empathetic. I can be stubborn but fair. I am a survivor that has faced many situations. This community is facing a situation; an uncertain future. I will use my all of traits to the best of my ability to help take this community into a bright and better future.

What you see is who I am. There is no mask I hide behind. I do not put on a front for anyone. I am a real person, faults and all. I have seen tough times in my life, but that just made me stronger, and more determined. It is this determination that will help me be a better council person.

Take it or leave it, that's who I am. I just hope that most of you will take the time to get to know me. To see that I completely have the best interests of this community in my heart, and in my head.

Just know, I will never be able to please all of you, all of the time. But as along as I am keeping the good of this community at the forefront of everything I do and every decision that I make; then you can rest easy at night, knowing that someone, without a hidden agenda really cares about what happens to the Crowsnest Pass and it's people.

If you have an issue, then I want to hear from you. I believe that there are no small issues. If it is important enough to concern you, then it is important to me, to hear you out. My door will always be open, my phone always on.

I believe that I am a good choice to represent you on council.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me.Thank you for considering me for a position on council.

If elected, I will be your voice on council. I will make your vote count!!

Please Vote Sasha JaegerBaird For Council

Things I Have Learned On The Campaign Trail...

Things I Have Learned On The Campaign Trail...

  • At least one other person will come up with the same slogan as you.

  • When you think that you have found a replacement slogan, someone will inevitably come up with it too.

  • Every candidate will eventually quote each other, whether intentionally or not.

  • At least two candidate will have the same color signs. Thus confusing the voters.

  • As in the case of this election, two candidates have very similar names. Sig Gail and Gail Sygutek This is NOT confusing you, is it?!?!

  • All candidate's are not created equal.

  • Some candidates are more equal than other's.

  • There is always the "fringe" candidate. It's just figuring out who that is....

  • There is always at least one very vocal candidate.

  • There is always that one candidate who is "out-to-lunch"

  • There is always one candidate that should have hung it up long ago.

  • Every candidate thinks they have the best plan for the future.

  • Every candidate has an opinion.

  • Everyone you meet has an opinion.

  • Everyone that has an opinion thinks that theirs is the most important opinion.

  • Everywhere you go, someone wants to talk. As a result, my poor daughter is always rolling her eyes, while she once again waits for me. ( Note: She is getting used to it, in fact she is coming to expect it. lol )

  • My daughter is becoming a latch key kid. Can that happen at 15??? (Don't worry, we spend a lot of time together. She is almost always with me, when not at school. See the point above this one.)

  • My ex-husband and I have spent more time together in the past three days than we have in the last three years. ( He is one of my campaign crew and is helping to put up signs.Thank you. :-) )

  • I will spend part of each week putting up signs.

  • I will spend at least part of every day checking signs.

  • I will spend at least part of every day chasing signs that have blown away in the wind.

  • I will curse the wind and make yet again a new sign to replace "the one that got away"!!

  • No matter how you attach your signs to the wood stakes, they will blow off, bend and rip in the wind.

  • Election signs will appear at an alarming rate. Overnight!! Almost like coat hangers reproducing in your closet.

  • I will redo my brochure at least three times until I like the way it looks.

  • I will count and recount my brochures at least twice to get the right amount for the post office to deliver. (Should have been paying attention to counting instead of watching TV.)

  • I will get very good at multi-tasking. (I was always good at this, but now I am much better.)

  • I will stop and really listen to what my daughter/son was saying instead of mindlessly agreeing. (Hmmm, what was that you said honey?? You invited how many for dinner?!?!? I said it was okay?!?!)

  • I will stop making excuses to the cashier at Sobey's, when I have come in for the fifth time that day.

  • I will remember how much work/fun campaigning was before I do it again. lol (I have really enjoyed it.)

  • I will walk more miles in a day than I have in the last year.

  • I will knock on more doors in these few weeks, than I have in my lifetime.

  • I will still have just as much trouble remembering names, as I ever did. (That is where my notebook has come in handy. Now I just have to remember where I put my notebook.)

  • I will meet more people in the few weeks of campaigning, than I met at my first wedding. (...and my Mom invited a lot!!! Great, Great Uncle Bill??? Never heard of him. Okay Mom, you can invite him.)

  • Everyone feels that they know you.

  • Everyone feels that they can come up to you, at all hours, in any situation and talk to you. (I'm sorry, can I please finish in the bathroom and then we can talk??) lol

  • People ask you the weirdest questions. (Hope I was able to  answer that for you alright?)

  • Stranger's share the most intimate details with you.

  • People either love you or dislike you. Even the one's who don't know you.

  • There are always lots of rumors abound. (Hopefully none about you.)

  • Your family feels the stress of the election process. (People constantly stopping them to ask questions, that they have no idea the answers to. "Ummmm, ask my Mom, she's the one running.")

  • I am getting in shape without the benefit of an exercise program.

  • My mouth is in better shape than the rest of me. It is getting plenty of exercise!!!

  • For once in my life, I can finally fall sleep right away at night.

  • I have more Facebook friends that anyone I know. (Half of them, I don't personally know.)

  • I spend more time reading, what I would have once considered useless and uninteresting information, than I ever have in my life. (Now it is both fascinating and mandatory!! And I think I have wore out another pair of reading glasses.)

  • The Municipality website has become my favorite place to surf.

  • The ladies at the Municipality have become my best friends, next to the ladies at the post office, and the ladies at the copy store, and the staff at both of the newspaper's, and Dino at MountianView Industries Wood Shop, and the guys at the gas station, and ......

  • I've read more other people's (candidate's) blog's than I ever have. In fact, I never read a blog before, until I created my own for my campaign website. Now it is the first thing I do every day. Good morning, John, Dean, Emile, Brian, George....

  • The youth of this community want to be heard!!!

  • Everyone is still upset about the school busing issue and thinks council can do something about it. (If the newly elected council can, I'm sure we will try.) Notice I said "we"!! I am a positive thinker.

  • I have become really aware of just how positive a person I am!!

  • The Pass is really a BIG place!! lol (Especially when you are putting up and checking on signs.)

  • The Pass is a REALLY big place, especially when you are chasing signs!!! (Yes, that was me running down Highway 3, through Frank Slide, chasing yet again another sign!!) Rofl

  • Some of the other candidates are really considerate people. They have fixed my signs for me, when they needed fixing. Thank you, so much.

  • A two hour forum, and 5 minutes in total to speak (1.25 minute's to answer only 3 question's) is NOT enough time to get to know 22 people!!!

  • The Elk's Hall has not enough room to seat 350 people, even if a lot of them are standing.

  • I have really enjoyed campaigning and meeting new people.

  • I am looking forward to working on council. (Positive thinker!!)

  • Whatever happens Monday, I will run again in three years!!

  • Stay tuned, there are still three days left... lol

Have a Happy Day Everyone!!!

My Answer's to the Pass Herald's Candidate List of Questions...

1. What specific issues or projects do you feel it is most important for the Municipality to focus on in the next three years?

I feel there are several main issues or areas that the new council need to address over the next three years. I believe that we need to work on restoring the public's faith in council. It is time for much needed accountability. It's time we have total transparency of what goes on in council chambers during council meetings and behind closed doors. It's time we, as a community, know just where our hard-earned tax dollars are going AND where they have gone in the past. It's time to curb unnecessary spending and instead focus our tax-dollars into much needed infrastructure, facilities and transportation. Time to eliminate duplication of services and refocus the money into the areas of need.

The second area or issue to work on, should be to find ways to encourage new business, commercial and light industrial to our community, by ways of tax cuts and incentives.

Third is to find a way to unify the community. We need to create a sense of Community Unity that is currently sadly lacking. With this comes the need to find ways to encourage our children and future generations to want to stay here and live here.

2. How would you rate the current state of the Municipality, both economically and politically?

Economically, I feel that the Municipality is in an endless downward spiral. It is sitting in the past, with no hope or plans for a future. This needs to change, immediately. Politically, the Municipality is a joke. We have a totally dysfunctional council, leading employees who feel neglected and lost. There is no sense of pride or accomplishment. People have stagnated. We need to address this issue and restore pride in work and ability.

3. What specific strategies do you feel should be employed in increase the local tax base?

We need to find ways to attract new business, commercial and light industry to the Pass, this is one way to help expand our tax base. One way can be to use incentives and tax cuts to attract these things to the Pass. As well, if we improve and expand upon the facilities that we have, thereby giving our children a reason to remain here or to come back here and live, this too will help to increase the tax base.

4. Short of increasing the tax base, what would you do to promote the continuation of municipal services without dramatic tax increases?? Are there any areas where you feel the Municipality should spend less or more that it currently does?

I would honestly have to say that I would have to see the books and see where the spending has been going, before I can really address this question. However, I do feel that the Crowsnest Pass has much duplication of services, that could be eliminated. This is one area that spending could be cut and potentially redirected into new equipment and other necessary areas. If elected, I promise that I will make looking into the budget and how council has been spending our money, a priority. We need to know where our money has gone, for what and why. Only then can we begin to rebuild this great community.

My Answers to the CNP Promoter Candidate Questionaire

1. What do you think council’s three top priorities should be for the next term?

I believe that the top priority the new council needs to address is restoring the public's faith in council.

The second priority should be to find ways to encourage new business, commercial and light industrial to our community, by ways of tax cuts and incentives.

Third is to find a way to unify the community. We need to create a sense of Community Unity that is currently sadly lacking. With this comes the need to find ways to encourage our children and future generations to want to stay here and live here.

2. What specific actions need to be taken to expand our tax base?

We need to find ways to attract new business and light industry to the Pass, this is one way to help expand our tax base. As well, if we improve and expand upon the facilities that we have, thereby giving our children a reason to remain here or to come back here and live, this too will help to increase the tax base.

3. Describe your ideal land use plan for both residential and commercial development.

We need to utilize existing Municipal land for subsidized housing, senior's housing and a recreation centre. As well, we should be looking into making land available for the commercial and light industrial that we will be attracting with our new: the Crowsnest Pass is “Open For Business” attitude.

4. The municipality has an $18 million budget. What experience do you have to manage this?

Honestly, I have never handled a budget this high. I have owned and operated my own business, which is similar to the Municipality, but on a much smaller scale. I am a quick learner and I am very good with numbers. Also, I can see the big picture and I am a great research person. I feel I can bring all this to the table.

5. How will you define success for the governance of Crowsnest Pass?

Success for the Crowsnest Pass will start with a clean slate. We need a fresh new council to take us into the future. We need a council of like-minded people who are not afraid to get their feet wet and put into effect the recommendation of both the Cuff Report and the Crowsnest Pass Strategic Plan. We need a council who will really listen to the people of the Crowsnest Pass. I want to be a part of that voice of the people. If elected, I will be your voice on council.

Discussing the Issues

What made you decide to run?

I have always loved living here in the Crowsnest Pass. However, in recent years I have found myself becoming more passionate about several of the issues that face the Crowsnest Pass. I have written letters to the editor expressing some of my views on these issues. Numerous people approached me and spoke to me about what I wrote. They encouraged me to run for council. After a lot of thought and careful consideration, I decided that instead of sitting on the sidelines watching it all unfold around me, I should take a stand and run. I believe that the Crowsnest Pass and its people need a new voice on council. They need to know that their ideas, thoughts and votes matter. If elected, I will endeavor to make their votes count.

If you are elected what are some of the things that you will focus on during your term?

The first area that I see that needs fine-tuning is council itself. It's time for accountability. It's time we had total transparency of what goes on in council chambers during council meetings and behind closed doors! The public needs to know they can trust the leaders of this community. We need to restore the public's faith in council.

That being said, it's time we, as a community, know just where our hard-earned tax dollars are going and where they have gone. It’s time to curb unnecessary spending and instead focus our tax-dollars into needed infrastructure, facilities, and transportation.

Our community needs to focus on the areas in which we can encourage growth and long-term sustainability. We will always be a tourist destination, a place for the weekenders to come and a place in which people move to retire. What we need to focus on is bringing viable businesses and industry into our area.

We need to get this community working as one

Affordable Housing for Seniors and limited or low-income people.

Affordable housing has become a growing issue. Our community is comprised of many different socioeconomic groups. The Crowsnest Pass has always been as diverse an area as is its people. We are comprised of many different classes of people. We have the lower class (typified by poverty, unemployed, homelessness and more and more often - the elderly), the working class (often called the working poor, they are often the minimally educated. This class also includes the blue collar workers who are usually the skilled workers), and middle class (generally these are white collar workers and the upper middle class, comprised of professional people with higher incomes). We also have our share of the upper class (those who want for nothing and have no pressing economic needs). As might be expected, this class of people exercise a great deal of influence and power politically. They are privy to the first and best of both financial and business opportunities. It is they, through their influence, who often determine how the rest of us are affected. But they really have no idea how the working and lower classes live. We, as a whole, need to be aware of the issues within our community that affect the lower and working classes. Often they are the backbone of our community.

If we want to encourage young families to move here and raise their families, we need to have affordable housing. Without affordable housing, people can not hope to get their heads above water and see a future in this beautiful Crowsnest Pass. Affordable housing is imperative to their continued existence here.

Our seniors are our Heritage. Without them, we have nothing on which to base our past. We need them for our future. They need to be heard. They need to be respected. If they need our help, we should be bending over backwards to help them. They are the people who make up who we are today. Without our past we lose the essence of who we are. What has happened to our rich heritage? Here in the Pass, due to the uniqueness of its location, geography, history and diverse cultural and ethnic heritage, we should be using that to base our growth on, now and in the future. It’s what makes this such an unusual and special place in which to live. Seniors, too, are struggling with day-to-day expenses, higher taxes, utilities, and generally a higher cost of living. They live on fixed incomes. They often can’t even afford to fix their homes, and sometimes can’t even afford to continue living in them. Why? Because it’s getting too expensive to live here. Yet, what are their options? We don’t have enough room in our seniors facilities. Those facilities, as well, are getting too costly to afford. We need affordable housing!

We need positive change. Things around here need to change. We need to encourage growth! We need to encourage our children to stay here or have a reason to come back once they are finished with their post-secondary education. We need them to raise their families here. There has to be a good reason to do so. Without them, we are a dying community.

Make affordable housing a reality

We need local public transportation.

We are a community of about 5800. We live in a very unique place. It is made up of several smaller communities, Bellevue, Hillcrest, Frank, Blairmore and Coleman. It encompasses 373 square kilometres. It is a linear community and is spread over 27 kilometres in length, running along Highway 3. This unique development which also makes it harder for its younger and older residents to traverse its entirety. Many people in the Pass have to rely upon others to get them to where they want to go. That isn't always possible.

Even Sparwood, a community of about 3600, has a local public transportation system. They have Sparwood On The Go, their solution to getting around town. And they only have ONE town to get around. We have five.

Such an idea would not be hard to implement. We already have the service in place. One idea: We have the Town Rounder. Currently it only services the elderly, infirm and mentally challenged. Why not provide a pay per use service using this and one other bus. That would be all we need to service the entire pass. One going one direction while the other is going the opposite way and so on and so forth. It would solve so many current transportation problems. We currently have at least three decent sized vehicles that could facilitate this service. Two of them sit most days, empty and unused. One is sitting in the York Creek Lodge parking lot. The other one is in the hospital parking lot.

I, for one, would be willing to pay user fees for such a service. I have heard from many constituents that they, too, would be willing to pay user fees. I would even be willing to buy a monthly bus pass for my daughter, to enable her to get around the Pass. There are times that she can’t always rely on me for a ride. A local bus service would alleviate this issue.

Yes, there are certain logistics involved, but there always are. We just need to, as a community, stand up and voice our need for such a service. Council needs to listen to concerns like these and then move forward to put services like this into place.

This leads me to the current issue of the school busing cut-backs and how we could utilize public transportation to provide a solution to this problem. We live in a community with unique physical characteristics and unusual weather patterns. It is spread over a great distance. Expecting our children to walk to school in below freezing weather, through several foot high snow drifts and crossing a major highway, is totally unreasonable.

Without a public transportation service, these same children can no longer get to places that they used to be able to go, using the school bus service. What if they have an after school job? They can’t get to the next town over, because they are not allowed to use the school bus service for that. What if they need to go to a babysitter’s house or want to go to a friends place? This is no longer possible. What happens when the mercury dips into the minus 20s or 30s? Will they be staying home from school. What about the parents who don't drive? Or the parents that have a job that takes them to work much earlier than their children leave for school? We will have a lot of children staying at home alone, because they can no longer get to school or to a baby-sitter’s house. The Crowsnest Pass needs local public transportation!

Busing will help bring this community together

The Crowsnest Pass needs a centralized Public Recreation Centre

Most of you know already where I stand on this issue. It was printed in the August 6th issue of the Promoter in a letter to the Editor. It was titled: Our Children Are Our Future - We Should Be Listening To Them.

I will say it again here:

Dear Editor,

On June 22nd a group of grade 6 students from Isabelle Sellon School addressed council concerning their thoughts and ideas to make the Crowsnest Pass a more child and teen friendly community. One of these ideas was for council to consider a recreation centre. What a novel idea! To actually have a place for our children and the children of our future to hang out and do constructive things. What kind of place would this be? What kind of facilities would it have in it? Well, for starters, an indoor pool. We so desperately need this! This could be used all year round. We could amalgamate all the other interesting sports and recreational activities into this one facility. We could even put some of the adult activities there. It could be a facility with meeting rooms, new clubs to sign up for and participate in, an indoor rock climbing wall, a place for teens and tweens to hang out in a safe supervised environment and many, many other ideas. It could house the headquarters of numerous outdoor activities as well, like Minor Ball, Minor Hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Cross-Country Ski Club, maybe a junior quad squad club, Slow Pitch, and the Riding Club.

Did you know that here in the Pass we have many activities but they just are not well known or advertised? We have Tae-Kwon-Do, Yoga, Kick-boxing and Karate, the Piranhas Swim Club, a Community Choir, a weight-lifting club, an amateur radio club, a gymnastics club, the Crowsnest Pass Symphony, and the Taoist Tai Chi Society, just to name a few. Now imagine them all in one facility.

The Crowsnest Pass is promoted to be such a great place to move and live. It brags all these wonderful activities and more. It really does have a lot to offer. But not too many people realize it, as the activities and programs are so scattered. Get them all into one place and more people will be able to benefit from them. More people will realize what we have to offer.

We are a community of about 5800. Many of those are children below the age of 18. And they can’t wait to leave this boring place! Take it from a mother who raised four of her children in this community. My children all had many friends through the years who all said the same thing. They have nothing to do here. It is boring and they can not wait to leave! That is a sad testament to this beautiful place we call home. Some even call it paradise or a little slice of heaven. For who? Not our children who are leaving in droves! My 22 year old daughter left at 17 for the big city. She has no plans to return here to raise a family. Who really wants to come back to a place that offers nothing to our children?

Even Sparwood, a community of 3600 people, has a recreation centre. They boast an indoor pool, Arts Facilities and Programs, Fitness Classes, Preschool and Children’s Program’s, Squash and more. Fernie, with a population of about 4200, has its Leisure Services, which offer an Aquatic Centre, Art’s Station, Curling Club and numerous other recreational activities. And to the east of us, Pincher Creak, population about 3600, provides a wide variety of facilities and programs to enhance active living and the well being of the community. They have the Pincher Creek Multipurpose Facility. This 23 000 square foot multi-use facility offers something for everyone all under one roof, including an Aquatic Centre, Library, Conference and Meeting Rooms, Soccer Field and other outdoor recreational facilities. They also have the Memorial Community Centre Arena. The winter Arena season runs from October 1 to March 31 and offers a wide variety of tournaments, games, drop-in opportunities and special events. Pincher also has its Community Recreation Centre. This complex includes the Golf Clubhouse, Restaurant, Chinook Lanes Bowling, Squash Courts, Volleyball and a Weight Training and Fitness Club, all under one roof.

Do we see a trend developing here? Well, it’s certainly not in the Crowsnest Pass. Our children are screaming for something to do. Do we hear them? Are we going to listen? Is council? Is your child’s happiness not worth the money it would take to build such a facility? Could we use an existing facility and expand it to house all these things?

Instead we have numerous other buildings housing the current activities. The expenses for these facilities are hemorrhaging the money into nowhere useful. We have the useless Crowsnest Centre, a real bone of contention for many living here. We have the half empty MDM, in Bellevue. What happened to our indoor skateboard park and indoor climbing wall? Not enough funds to justify being open? To many things spread over too much distance.

We live in a very unique community. It is made of of several smaller communities, Bellevue, Hillcrest, Frank, Blairmore and Coleman. It encompasses 373 square kilometres. It is a linear community and is spread over 27 kilometres in length, running along highway 3. This unique development also makes it harder for it’s younger and older resident’s to traverse its entirety. They have to rely upon others to get them to where they want to go. This brings up another very realistic issue that having a central recreational centre would help. A suggestion? Busing. A bus service for the residents of the Crowsnest Pass. Another novel but very useful idea.

Remember Sparwood, population about 3600. They have Sparwood On The Go, their solution to getting around town. And they only have one town to get around. We have five. It would not be hard to implement. We already have the service in place. We have the Town Rounder. Currently it only services the elderly, infirm and mentally challenged. Why not provide a pay per use service using this and one other bus. That would be all we need to service the entire pass. One going one direction while the other is going the opposite way and so on and so forth. It would solve so many current problems. Now that school busing is an issue for after school and our children can no longer get a ride to a friends place, our kids would have a way to get to and from their friends houses. They could get to Blairmore to watch a movie or go bowling. They could get to this recreation centre, wherever it may end up. The Crowsnest Pass needs a bus service. I could go on about the numerous other reasons why, but that is another letter for another time.

We need a place for our bored and restless children to entertain themselves. We need to know that they are in a safe environment. We need to know where they are and they are not out getting into trouble. Because that is what a lot of them are doing now. Many parents may not want to admit it, but I know where your children are going, when you are not around or you think they are somewhere else. They go to bush parties, they get drunk, do drugs and are sexually active. This is happening at younger and younger ages. It’s a scary reality. Now a recreation centre won’t solve all those issues, but it will provide a place for the average child to hang out. It will provide a place to see their peers and bond on a better level. It will provide a place to do activities that they want to be involved in. Give them a voice! Let it be heard! This is what they want.

The Pass needs a future and our children are it. If we listen to them and provide such a place, then maybe, just maybe they will move back here once they are finished with their secondary education. Maybe they will think it is a fine place to raise a family. Maybe, just maybe they will know that there is a place that their children can go to and feel safe, cared for and respected.

One last thing I want to say about having a recreation centre. Recreation builds strong families and healthy communities. Families that play together, stay together. Recreation provides safe developmental opportunities for children. Recreation, sports, arts and culture produce leaders who serve their communities in many ways. Recreation, sports, arts and culture build social skills and stimulate participation in community life. Recreation is often the catalyst that builds strong, self-sufficient communities (ie: sport groups, arts guilds). Art and culture helps people understand their neighbors, their history and their environment. Recreation and arts/culture build pride in a community. Recreation is a good thing. We should be putting it as a number one priority. Time to listen and look to the future. On June 22nd a group of students approached council with an idea. I hope that we decide to listen to them. This is just my humble opinion.

I think this letter says it all. "

The Crowsnest Pass should have a centralized Public Recreation centre. We really have a need for it.”

Currently this idea is in the Crowsnest Pass Strategic Plan. If elected, I will do what I can to see that ground is broken on this Recreation Centre.

A recreation centre will draw families to the area
 and make families want to stay

Community Unity - What does this mean?

The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass is a specialized municipality. The municipality formed as a result of the amalgamation of five municipalities – the Village of Bellevue, the Town of Blairmore, Town of Coleman, the Village of Frank and Improvement District No. 5 (which includes the Hamlet of Hillcrest) – almost 32 years ago, on January 1, 1979. Crowsnest, Passburg and Sentinel (Sentry) are other former communities within the municipality's boundaries. We have come together as one community, but we are far from having community unity.

Travelling around the Pass recently and talking with people, I have noticed one common denominator. Many people are saying the same thing. Why, when we were supposed to come together and be one community, does it still feel like we are five individual towns? Everybody who lived here then remembers the days when we were five separate places. Many remember when each town felt some amount of antagonism toward the other towns. They stood independent and separate from the rest of the Pass. Each town had its own mayor, movie theatre, grocery store and much, much more. Each town was healthy and thriving. Then someone suggested, for whatever the reasons were back then, that we would be better off as one community governed by one council and one mayor. Well, what has happened? Did we come together for the better? In some ways, yes. In many ways, we are still just as distant and disjointed as we were then. Only now, each town is a small part of a whole, that is extremely dysfunctional.

What do we do together as a community? We still have Bellecrest Days. But many people feel that this is just for the communities of Bellevue and Hillcrest. Coleman has its Canada Day celebrations. Blairmore has Rum Runner Days. It was posed to me, where do we have a celebration where we celebrate being a united community? What happened to the good intentions?

Many continue to ask this question. I am surprised the amount of passion that this issue stirs up. Of course many of those who have spoken about this remember those days clearly. What about those who don't? The younger generations? The people who have moved here from other places? They would have no knowledge of this issue. But you can believe that some of them, too, feel the discontinuity of this community. So what do we do? Let's ask the people! Let's listen to them. What do they want? What do they see as bringing us together in come kind of Community Unity? This is one area that I would like to see us draw on the strengths of each community, within our municipality, and how we can bring it all together for a lasting and profound effect of unity.

Let's Put the Unity Back into Community

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These are some of the main issues that I hope to see some positive action happen on, within the upcoming years. I am open to the public's ideas and suggestions to facilitate the change that the Crowsnest Pass needs, in order to grow and flourish, as a united community. I want to hear from you!
The Crowsnest people need to know that their vote and voice counts! I will be that voice, I will be that vote!!
I am running in the upcoming 2010 Municipal Election. I need your vote! A vote for me is a vote for you!
What the New Council Needs
If I could hand pick the new council, this is who it would be comprised of.
The new council would have a representative from each of our five communities, Hillcrest, Bellevue, Frank, Blairmore Coleman and one from Sentinel.
Of these six people, there would be a business owner, an engineer, a working class person, at least one woman, a senior/retired person, and a younger person.
It could be any combination thereof.
I feel that these type of people would best represent our community. It gives us a good, across the board, image of the people who live here in the Pass.
I do feel strongly that we need at least one woman on council. Two would be better.
I don't want to offend any men here, but there are good reasons to have women sitting on council.
Women look at things differently than men. They react differently and process things differently.
They do not posture with each other. They do not generally compete with each other or one up each other for a position of power. Women tend to have a calming effect on things.
They are the nurturers. They see things from a whole different perspective then men. They think differently than men. Women are used to multi-tasking and still making effective choices.
They can balance council out.
With the council we have had for the last 6 years (2 terms) we have had a lot of posturing. It has been totally male dominated. We have seen the results of this. It has not been good.
Having a couple of women on council would be good for the Crowsnest Pass.
When it comes time to vote, please keep this in mind.
16 Days Until Election Day
It's almost that time again.
It seems that we were only voting a short time ago. Three years has gone by quite quickly.
Many questions have come up about that time period. What did the council that was elected last time do for us? What changes were made. What policies were put into effect, and in what ways did the council try to ensure the continued growth of the Crowsnest Pass?
Our questions now are: do we vote the same council back in again? Are any of the same councillors worth having back on council? Do we want a clean slate?
These are the questions that are on everyone's minds.
This election has a lot of people talking. That is a good thing. People need to be involved in the process.
Your vote is very important. Just as who you vote for.
Know your candidates. Ask questions. Don't be afraid to call them up, or stop them if you see them.
Most importantly make sure you exercise your right to vote and get out to vote, on October 18th, 2010.
The people of the Crowsnest Pass will be determining who they want to lead us for the next three years, and beyond.
There are a lot of good candidates running. Pick one, pick 5, pick 7. It's your choice. But make sure you do get out and pick someone who you believe supports what you feel is the best representation of what you want to see for the future of the Crowsnest Pass.
It's time for a change!! It's time we look ahead to a better future.
What Will I Do If Elected??
What will I bring to council??
I have been asked these question's and decided to reply here.
The first thing that I would do, if elected to council, is go over the books. It's time for accountability. Where has the money gone and where is it going?? What money has been allocated for what??
The good people of the Crowsnest Pass need to know how their tax dollars are being spent. This is a pressing issue on many minds.
I have audited books before. I am a numbers person. I am very good at looking for, and finding discrepancies. I spent one year as a local Trustee for CUPE, auditing 5 years worth of the books. I  have owned my own business and did payroll, inventory control, and accounts payable and receivable. I bring this experience to the position. Together with the other council members, I will get the answers that the people are asking about.
Once we find where the money is going (or has gone), then we can decide if it needs revision or redirection. Maybe our tax dollars need to be redistributed to more vital areas in the community. Eliminating the duplication of services, is a good starting point.
The second thing that I would attack is bringing much needed business and maybe some light industry back to the Pass. I think offering tax breaks and maybe some incentives to new businesses would be a good start. We need to let the rest of the world know that the Crowsnest Pass is "Open For Business" !! That would make a great headline!!
If elected, I would make it a focus of council to find ways to attract this business to the Pass. More business, even with tax breaks for them, means a bigger tax base for the community, as whole. A bigger tax base, means less taxes for the rest of us. A win-win situation.
The third thing on my list would be filling the need for low income housing. We have plenty of real estate on which to build this housing. We just need to combine our resources with the Provincial government and potential investors to get this started. The Municipality has plenty of land that can be "donated" for this housing. If we are attracting new business and light industry here, then maybe outside "reputable" investors would want to come in and invest in this project. Again a win-win situation.
At the same time, I feel we have a real need for a Public Recreation Centre, with a year round indoor pool. This would keep young families here, giving their children something to do. It would also attract more families to the area. More people staying or coming to live in the Pass means a broad, bigger tax base, (therefore keeping taxes down). It means a more successful looking community (therefore attracting more business, industry and investors). More business, industry and investors equal more money, less taxes, more resources, etc. Again another win-win situation.
In conjunction with this Public Recreation Centre, we need Public Transportation. People of all ages need a way to get around the Pass. There are many who don't drive and have to rely on other people (friends, parents, cabs) to get around this 27km long community. With an economical way to do so, they would utilize places, like a Public Recreation Centre, more easily.
Currently, these issues are part of the Crowsnest Pass Strategic Plan. Within in this plan are several keys areas. One is to explore the feasibility of developing a centre appropriate for art, culture and musical events (orchestra, theatre, etc.). This could easily be incorporated into the Recreation Centre. The date set for this is 2012, and needs to be approved by council. There is also a plan to conduct a feasibility study for a multi-use recreation facility. The date for this is 2011 (fast approaching), and needs to be approved by council and a budget set. The other one on the books is a plan to conduct a review and cost/benefit analysis of Public Transportation and Public Transportation Policy. The date for this is now, 2010, and needs approval by council and a budget set.
There is also a plan to support the development of affordable housing for seniors and low income residents. There is no date set, it is just "ongoing". So what is happening there then?? What has been put in place?? What does ongoing mean?? If elected, I will find out!!
These issues have been plainly set out within the Crowsnest Pass Strategic Plan. So current council must be already aware of these issues. The big question is, what has been done about them??? Why isn't the general public aware of this plan. The people of the Crowsnest Pass are crying for these things. You would think that council would be going out of their way to assure us that these issues are being addressed. Maybe current council has no intention of dealing with these things. Possibly that is why we have stagnated, as a community.
This is why we need a clean sweep of council. A clean slate on which to start with a fresh new outlook. A council that that will take the Crowsnest Pass into the future!!!
If elected, I will endeavour to see that these plans are implemented. I will do my best to help facilitate the change that the Crowsnest Pass needs, in order to grow and flourish as a united community. I will be your voice on council. I will make your vote count!!!
By the way, this "Crowsnest Pass Strategic Plan" is available on the Municipality website, at http://www.town.crowsnestpass.ab.ca/
or it can be obtained at the Municipal Building, in Coleman.
Feel free to check it out. You may find a lot of interesting plans for the Crowsnest Pass.
For Council
The Crowsnest Pass Is Open For Business
That is the sign that the new council needs to be putting out for our community.
Once again, the Crowsnest Pass has been passed over by a major well-known company. Instead, The Brick has decided to open it's doors with our neighbor to the east.
The town of Pincher Creek continues to grow, while here in the Pass, business after business are closing their doors.
This is the third major retailer that we have lost to Pincher, in so many years.
Why??
The answer is an easy one. Current council put up the "Sorry We are Closed" sign, years ago.
Light industry and businesses don't even look our way anymore.
We have a reputation, and it isn't good.
What do we need to do in order to change this?
A clean slate for one!!!
We need a fresh new council, with a fresh new outlook and fresh new ideas. We need to encourage business and light industry to come to our valley. We need to hang out the, we are "Open For Business" signs!!
What happens, in this election, is going to be very important to the Crowsnest Pass. We need to elect the right group of people who can work with each other, instead of against each other. We need people who have a vision for the future of the Pass.
We need change!!
And it can't come soon enough!!
Get out and vote in the upcoming CNP election, on Monday October 18th, 2010. Your vote may make all the difference. Support those who have a clear vision for the future of our home.
Send a message to the rest of the world that the Crowsnest Pass is back in business and here to stay!!!
Great Choices
We have 22 candidates running for a position on council. Three for mayor. Nineteen for councillor.
What a race this will be!!
The wonderful thing is that there are several really good choices. It's great to have choices!!
There are at least five people I would personally pick for councillor and one for Mayor. These six I would have no problems working with. They would make an awesome team. Clear thinkers, level headed, fair, and looking out for the better interest of the Crowsnest Pass.
I would be proud to mark their names off, come election day.
Stand up and make your vote count on election day, Monday October 18th, 2010.
If elected, I promise to always make your vote count!! I will be the voice of the people.
Have you given any thought to who you want to make up this team??
What Was He Thinking??
I am questioning the motives, of some of the Candidates, for this CNP election.
Why you may ask??
It can be explained simply:
Today I went into a business, as I have every day for the last week. I have been busy handing out my brochures every where I go. People have been very receptive and even have asked a lot of questions.
Enquiring minds want to know: Where do I stand on the issues? What do I think are the most important issues and what do I see myself doing about them??
I have been more than happy to address each and every enquiry.
Sometimes, to my daughter's dismay. I have spent many more than a few minutes discussing what people want to talk about. She understands perfectly though. My daughter supports me 100%. This is what a candidate, who really cares about the community, does. A candidate listens, talks and gives answers to the best of their ability.
This is where my question "What was he thinking??" comes in.
Okay, so I'll recap. I went into a business. I had already handed out my brochures there once, so I was just shopping. Well, I ended up bumping into a woman I knew, from my hometown. She has lived here for awhile now. She loves the Crowsnest Pass, but she can see the problem with council and what has happened here as a result.
I offered her a brochure and she said she would only take one if I answered some questions for her. I, of course, was happy to.
Now here comes the part that floors me.
She said that another potential councillor had been in earlier that day. He wanted to get her to vote for him. He offered no information. When asked if she could ask him some questions, he declined. She wanted to know where he stood on certain issues and what he was going to do for her, if he was elected. All he could say was "That's not up to me, you have to ask council that." Nothing else. Then he left.
I asked her if she knew who he was. She told me that she didn't bother to register it, in her mind, as she had no interest in voting for someone like that.
It scares me to think that someone like that might get on council.
Now, who doesn't take the time to talk to the voters? Who is that confident, that they are going to get in, that they don't care if they show indifference to a voter? Why are they running?? What are they running for??
Maybe the main question is who are they running for? Are they one of these so called "lot" that is in one camp or the other?? One of the so called gang of four or gang of three?? Are they just running to split the vote? Keep someone else out? Is there a hidden agenda??
I ask... why would someone not care to talk to the voters?? What's up with that???
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Caution Folks: Know who you are voting for and where they stand on the issues. Are they affiliated with one set on present council or the other? Or are they nonpartisan, not belonging to or favouring one side or the other, but thinking totally independent?

I'm sure that the good people of the Crowsnest Pass want councillors who can think for themselves. The Crowsnest Pass people want councillors who have the ability to make decisions based on the facts, not what they might be able to use for personally gain or status.

Know your candidate!! Ask questions!!

Why Should You Vote????

If you don't exercise your right to vote, you are missing out on a great national privilege and a significant personal freedom.

Voting in a local, provincial, or national election is an exciting opportunity provided by democratic nations to their citizens. But some of us don't value that option when we fail to exercise our right to vote. Perhaps living in a third world nation where voting rights do not exist might change our minds.

There are many good reasons to vote, including the following:

1. Casting a vote allows an individual to express a choice among candidates who wish to become government leaders. It's up to each voter to locate available information about each candidate and to make an informed decision about how to vote. Rather than allowing potential leaders to hide weaknesses and wrong-doing from public awareness, a democratic voting process urges citizens to get involved and to share viewpoints about who should lead. Failing to vote is tantamount to saying you don't care. Few people truly remain oblivious to government leadership. Most have opinions about the way things should go, and they should use the voting process to express their preferences.

2. Voting provides a medium for citizens to support the democratic structure. If a majority of citizens chose not to vote, democracy might become a thing of the past, replaced by another form of government that might prove more elitist in nature. Voting means that you believe in the democratic process and will participate in it to represent your right to freedom of speech.

3. Supporting the electoral process helps to reinforce your regional government. Showing that you care with your vote tells candidates that they must be accountable to the public. It also suggests that those who introduce issues for a vote must provide adequate information to answer citizens' questions and address their concerns rather than attempt to foist a half-baked idea onto the general public.

4. Showing up at the poll on voting day sets a good example to others. Remember, your children observe all that you do and will learn from your example, right or wrong as it may be. Civic awareness is an important part of their training and one of the early steps on the road to maturity. Discuss the candidates with your family and make a point of mentioning your vote, or wearing the pin distributed at many polls that reads "I voted today." Voting also sets a positive example to neighbors, friends, and family who may be uninterested in or unfamiliar with the electoral system.

5. Finally, taking time to vote reflects pride in your nation and its government. The country becomes a beacon of freedom for the rest of the world who will be watching. Let everyone know that you care enough about your homeland and its leaders to have a say in the election's outcome. Never surrender your right to speak your mind via the vote on election day.

Social Deficit

John Prince wrote a thought-provoking article in his blog today. It concerned the Social Deficit here in the Crowsnest Pass.

After reading it, I can say "John, I absolutely agree with you!! Well written. Well done!!"

I would hope that anyone else, after reading it, would take the time to really digest what John has to say. It is so true. If you haven't read it, the link to it is here: http://blog.johnprince.ca/

The community needs to wake up and smell the pork frying, and it isn't in my kitchen. I know I can't afford the price of ham with fat attached. It's been that way most of my adult life. But we all know who, of those of us can. According to local stats, it isn't at least 27% - 37% of our population. As John said, that number is conservative. Those numbers are based on the 2006 census. That was before the recession hit us.

This community needs to elect people who know what it's like to do without, to struggle and overcome obstacles. They are the people who will work hard to support this community. These are the people who will help this community out of it's economic slump. They are the people who will bring this Crowsnest Pass into the future.

Make your vote count on election day!! Vote after getting to know the candidates. Read or hear what they have to say.

There is a Public Forum at 7:00 pm on Monday September 27th, at the Elk's Hall. Go and ask questions. Talk to the candidates. Get to know them as individuals. Know what they do and the circumstances from where they came. Are they relatable? Are they like you and me?? Do they understand hardship and the plight of the needy?? Are they part of someone else's political agenda? Are they in it for personal gain or exposure? Are they real day-to-day average people. Or are they the one's who spend their time looking down upon the rest of us??? Most of all, what is their platform, the issues that they believe are important? Are they the people who will lead this beautiful community into the future?

You need to know these things before you vote.

Some of them will be coming around to meet you. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Ask the hard one's too. They may or may not have an answer, but take note of the one's who will try to get an answer for you. And I'm not saying that canned pat answer that seems like it's coming from a politician. You want the answer from a person who really cares what your opinion is and how you feel. Do they really listen to what you have to say?? Read their literature, and their websites. Get to know them. For they will be the one's leading the Crowsnest Pass forward.

What kind of future do you see?? More of the same, being lead down the garden path??? Or do you see a bright future?? Are you unsure?? This is why you need to know who you will be electing.

There are some new choices. There are some choices that have the same old agenda as the current council members. There are some that have been groomed by the one's currently in council; one's that will be lead around on a leash by those not holding an office, but holding all the cards. Then there are some good choices. People who speak their mind and are not afraid to stand up and be heard and counted!! People who are not easily manipulated by the establishment. These are some of the choices that you have. Make a smart choice. Make a choice that will be good for this community.

It is your right to vote on Election day. People fought for your right to vote!! It is your civic duty to do so. Make your voice heard. Stand up and make your voice count!!
